The Vegan Diet and Karma
Of all the trends at the moment that are sweeping the globe, probably
the most positive and fastest growing one would have to be the
vegan/vegetarian
diet. The original hippies preached this way of eating
as it involved compassion and non-cruelty to animals and there seems to
be a resurgence of the hippy ways these days, although the iconic peace
symbol has not resurfaced.
This re-surging trend is coming at the right time as the developed
countries struggle which chronic obesity,
heart disease, cholesterol,
cancer
and a whole list of problems, which are mostly due to the meat
based diet.
Never before in the history have their been so many
livestock animal on the planet (some 70 billion), all bred with the
purpose of being eaten for 'food' if you can call it that. This large
number of animals being reared for 'food' seems to be putting enormous
strain on the planets ecosystems. Huge amounts of land are used to grow
grains to feed to these animals, yet they hardly provide back what was
put in. To such a degree actually that it has been calculated that if
the grains were fed to humans instead of animals, we could feed an
additional 14 billions humans, which is twice the worlds current
population.
The lousy numbers are due to the fact that it takes around 7kg of
vegetable protein to produce 1 kg of animal protein. That is where most
of the amazon is going, it's being cleared to grow soy so people all
over the world can keep eating excessive amounts of meat. It all seems
a
little unfair considering close to 1 billion of our earthly brother and
sisters are starving in third world countries.
But the buck doesn't stop there, it also seems that livestock
is the
largest contributor to global warming, with methane being 70 times
more
potent as a greenhouse gas than CO2, and livestock being the worlds
largest methane emitter. The UN released a report called 'Livestocks
Long Shadow' which shows the numbers.
And the list goes on and on, ground pollution, human health problems,
air pollution, financial problems (just look at the global expenditure
on heart disease and diabetes) all related to meat consumption. The
news just the other day reported that 60% of US bankruptcies were due
to
health care bills! Wouldn't a $300
full body cleanse and a vegan
diet
be easier than having your rib cage sawn open and your arteries scraped
out and sewn back together, and then being hit with a massive bill and
years of suffering and a lifetime of cholesterol lowering drugs! The
choice is easy really.
But that is not all, now we also have the swine flu, which has
been
thoughtfully renamed by the WHO to H1N1 to avoid people
associating it
with pigs, even though all evidence points to intensive factory farming
of pigs as being the place where the virus originated. So in a way
calling it swine flu
is not really fair to the pigs as they couldn't
help the fact that they were so weak and sick and created a breeding
ground for this monster, but it was really the fault of the factory
farms trying to make ever more profits by exploiting the lives of these
precious creatures.
Lets hope we all live to see the day when humans treat all animals as
their companions on the planet and not their slaves.
