Herbs for Health
Herbs were our first medicine, and are from where most pharmaceutical drugs are derived today. Even in the year 1965, over 130 million prescriptions in the US were written that were based on herbs. In fact today, the majority of the world still relies on plants and herbs to cure their health problems. It's only in the Western world, where drugs and pharmacies have become more popular due to the elaborate medical system, and the way it is set up and regulated.
In the United States, herbal medicines can be bought from a health food shop, and the doctors will rarely, or never prescribe herbs to treat sicknesses. Yet in many European countries, some herbs are actually prescribed by doctors, and in the case of Germany, the herbs are also prepared to pharmaceutical standards and sold in chemists with a prescription.
The ongoing debate over which system is better goes on. But there is no question about the effectiveness of plants in curing disease. The plant kingdom has evolved over time in symbiosis with the humans and animals around them, to provide them with the necessary means to heal themselves. The complex chemical makeup of herbs cannot be matched by synthetic alternatives, and possibly never will. The herbs contain the necessary buffering agents to help the active ingredients administer their aid, while minimizing side effects.
Many of today's modern medicines are derived from plants, take the famous heart stimulating medicine called digitalis for example, it is derived from the foxglove plant. Quinine is another fine example, excellent at reducing fever, yet is is derived from the Peruvian bark in South America. But the list goes on endlessly, and some of the compounds that have been synthesized, we are not even aware of which plant it was take from, as the pharmaceutical industry searches tirelessly in every corner of the natural world for substances to cure our ails. Unfortunately in many cases the natural herb itself would heal the sickness alone, without the complicated and expensive system of regulation, synthesis, patents, etc.
Apart from all the politics behind these simple plants, one truth remains, herbs still grow all over the world, in almost every garden, and we are still free to consume them as we please.
