A Happy and Healthy Lifestyle

There is an infinite number of different ways in which people live their lives, and an equally infinite number of different kinds of people. To ask the question, “how to be happy?” is a difficult one to answer, but from the study of various cultures, religions and people, it seems that there are some commonalities that run through the lives of those people who seem the most contented and happy within.

The First Common Happiness Trait – Belief in Happiness

The first and probably foremost commonality is the belief in happiness itself. Without believing it is possible, then it is difficult to obtain. Most people generally have moments of happiness in their lives and also moments of suffering. But most of us would like to avoid the suffering bit and just skip straight to the happiness.

The Second Common Happiness Trait – Non-attachment

The second common trait noticed among happy people, would have to be non-attachment. The great Master and founder of Buddhism, Shakumuni Buddha, explained the Four Noble Truths, in which he explained that the root cause of suffering is attachment.
The origin of suffering is attachment.
“The origin of suffering is attachment to transient things and the ignorance thereof. Transient things do not only include the physical objects that surround us, but also ideas, and -in a greater sense- all objects of our perception. Ignorance is the lack of understanding of how our mind is attached to impermanent things. The reasons for suffering are desire, passion, ardour, pursuit of wealth and prestige, striving for fame and popularity, or in short: craving and clinging. Because the objects of our attachment are transient, their loss is inevitable, thus suffering will necessarily follow. Objects of attachment also include the idea of a "self" which is a delusion, because there is no abiding self. What we call "self" is just an imagined entity, and we are merely a part of the ceaseless becoming of the universe.”

Attachment can be seen in many ways, and this discussion could, and has gone on for over 2500 years since the Buddha first taught this. But in today’s society which is so filled with materialism, ego and self indulgence, attachment is something most of us are quite immersed in.

The Third Common Happiness Trait – A Belief in Something Higher than Ourselves

The third common trait noticed among people who are happy is a belief in something higher. Some people choose to call this God, Buddha, Mohammed, Christ, the Spirit within and many others. But these names are really only just a concept in the person’s mind which represents the idea that there is something greater than themselves. This may not be just a belief for some people as they may have experienced glimpses of something much more divine than this earthly existence. But nevertheless, proving it is probably impossible, but their belief, faith or knowledge is most usually unshakable.

The Fourth Common Happiness Trait – Knowing How to Give and Receive Love

The fourth common trait noticed among people who are happy is knowing how to give and receive love. These people recognize that love is everywhere, in humans and animals alike. They focus on it, give it and gladly receive it. It is kind of like a habit to them and everyone seems to like them, even dogs and cats, because they just exude that feeling everyone is looking for.

The Fifth Common Happiness Trait – Compassion

The fifth common trait noticed among people who are happy is compassion. Compassionate people definitely suffer less. “Do unto others as you would have the do unto you” is a famous quote by Jesus which shows how our actions come back to us. The Buddhists and Hindus believe in Karma which is also similar. The extent to which a person shows compassion is far reaching and always includes the way we treat other humans, but what about our animal friends? A vegetarian diet saves the lives of countless animals. Eating meat is indirectly causing great harm to others, and even ourselves.

The Sixth Common Happiness Trait – Meditation

The sixth common trait noticed among people who are happy is a habit of meditation. This does not always mean sitting with crossed legs (although often it does). Some people may slip into meditation while watering the garden or even surfing, but nevertheless the person is tasting the divine within.
Of course there are many other qualities that happy people posses, but the above four make a good starting point from where we can start to look within ourselves and see what we can change to make our lives more enjoyable.
